During last week’s trip to
California, we drove out to Goat Rock Beach, where the Russian River flows into
the Pacific Ocean. A colony of Pacific Harbor Seals has managed to hang on here,
in spite of troublesome people and pollution.
Occasionally one of them went for a swim, willing to
catch a fish if it was easy.
I think that seal was smiling.

ReplyDeleteSeals or selkies feature in many British legends. Is this the same in the US?
I just know of one legend of the selkie girl who gave up her skin, and I think that is one of the old English or Irish tales that immigrated. The coastal Indian tribes must have had some stories about the seals, but I don't know them.
DeleteAren't they fun? We've been on the Pacific Coast this summer for an extended period and have so enjoyed viewing seals too - I totally agree with your observation. And otters? They're a lot of fun too. I always swear they're smiling at us.
ReplyDeleteI would love to see otters! I've seen them at the aquarium but never in the wild. They always seem to be playing.
